My personal focus in the coming year will be divided between two things, www.booksanctuary.co.uk and furthering my study, as I return to University for post-graduate study 4 years after my graduation. The decision to study again was driven by a desire to re-focus my life on my passion, literature. Four years working in areas such as web editing and IT showed me that my strengths, aptitudes and attitude to life were not suited to forging a career for 30+ years in a solid, reliable job. I’m fortunate that my somewhat bohemian hopes for my working life are supported so wholeheartedly by my family. I’ll be studying ‘Material Cultures and the History of the Book’ at Edinburgh University and I can’t wait to start.
I’m planning to run this blog across two strands in the coming weeks and months; this strand will focus on studying, not necessarily restricted to university study but study in general. The act of studying is a defining trait of humanity, representing the desire to increase knowledge and understanding and then pass that knowledge onto future generations. What I’m discovering is that the resources available for study enhancement are increasingly diverse and, in some ways, complex. The internet in particular has revolutionised accessibility of books, journals and articles. Even with only four years away from study I am still amazed and slightly intimidated by the sheer volume of content available. I’ll be writing entries to reflect my experience and thoughts on the sheer scope of material now available in any given subject area.
The second strand for the blog will focus on updates regarding www.booksanctuary.co.uk, publishing, creative writing news and areas of interest. I’m passionate about the future of literature in both print and eBook format. I also believe in the strength of the creative writing tradition and the role that Book Sanctuary can take in promoting and encouraging writers and readers alike.
The next blog entry will be next week, so please have a look and let me know what you think.
Warmest regards,
Thomas
