In recent weeks I’ve experienced distinct challenges in starting two new ventures, the Book Sanctuary website and a return to University. I thought I’d share a few thoughts on the difficulties of starting something new.
For starters, it helps if you’re someone who is confident and outgoing; not advantages that I boast! It is the easiest thing to type a blog and post it online, but something different to tackle the real world head on. Although I’m capable of meeting new people and taking on a new challenge, I always have to force myself to do it. I also struggle to express myself and be natural in new surroundings; I find myself communicating a version 0.5 of myself, a version of me that lacks most of my quirks. It takes me far too long to get comfortable in a new environment and to loosen up amongst new people. Can I improve this? Probably, but I think this is all just part of my character, for better or worse.
The second biggest challenge is getting started in your new venture and convincing others to share it with you. The problems outlined above make this difficult, but I like the think that persistence is everything. Personally, I’m willing to endure the nerves, awkward conversations and beads of sweat down the back (really!), because I want to build a life I’ll enjoy, even if I have to sacrifice security and comfort to do it. For those who find new ventures and meeting new people easy, I’m utterly jealous and filled with envy…
Anyway, a short post this time. From now on I’ll be posting shorter blogs more frequently about eBooks and Book Sanctuary, as well as experiences from studying.
All the best,
Thomas
